Executive Summary

Every two minutes a woman dies of cervical cancer, a disease caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV)—a preventable, and, if caught early, treatable condition.

The vast majority of cervical cancer deaths are in Sub-Saharan Africa, which also has the highest HIV burden. Women living with HIV are up to five times more likely to develop cervical cancer, highlighting the urgent need to increase synergies between HIV and cervical cancer programming.

mothers2mothers (m2m) will scale up our proven peer-to-peer approach and enhance the sexual and reproductive health services we provide in five African countries, to help end cervical cancer by: 1) Adding services focused on HPV prevention, early identification, treatment, and care to reach more than 10 million adolescent girls and young women and adolescent boys and young men; 2) Broadening our geographic coverage; 3) Partnering with Village Reach to ensure that HPV vaccines and other health supplies reach the last mile; and 4) Strengthening the network's capacity.

Accomplishments

In no way, shape, or form was it business as usual for m2m in 2020…nor for any other organization in the world. The global COVID-19 pandemic shook the world to its core.

While many organizations were forced to suspend operations—and some were unable to survive extraordinary lockdowns and business disruption—m2m achieved something truly remarkable in 2020 that adds a new dimension to our Peer Mentor Model and will ultimately support our long-term goal of Universal Health Coverage. We pivoted to an eServices platform that allows us to continue delivering lifesaving health care services when our frontline health workers are unable to engage clients in person for any reason, such as pandemic-related lockdowns and travel restrictions.

We are proud that in 2020 we reached 1,332,449 total clients through direct service delivery and technical assistance—a 4 percent increase over 2019.
