Executive Summary

Eleven percent of South Africa’s population is under five years old. While South Africa has prioritized Early Childhood Development (ECD) through its Grade-R program (age 5+) and optimized its National Curriculum Framework for 0-4-year-olds, 60% of services are urban, costly, and not well-positioned for rural populations. Additionally, there are limited mental health services, especially for women in rural areas — 39% of whom suffer postpartum depression — which may exacerbate children’s outcomes.

IRD and partners aim to build ecosystems of play for 0-to-4-year-olds and their caregivers in rural South Africa. Through co-created playhouses, the program will offer ECD classes for children, daycare services, and mental health counseling for caregivers. Each playhouse will have a community outreach arm, where local women, especially grandmothers (gogos), will be trained to conduct ECD sessions via HomeKits in villages.

Over five years, IRD and partners aim to impact 240,000 children, train 1,700 local caregivers, and screen 330,000 adults for mental health wellbeing.
