Executive Summary

The Economics Transformation Project (ETP) aims to increase the number of women/underrepresented minorities in economics. Economics is a field that is unique in its disproportionate influence on nearly every aspect of life, cutting across private and public sectors globally. Therefore, it is crucial for economics to better represent the diversity of the societies it impacts to ensure that wide-ranging perspectives inform policy. ETP will serve as a vehicle for expanding access to economics by reducing structural barriers - including perception and information problems, unequal access to mentors, and discrimination - that inhibit the entry and retention of women and minorities. The diversity of identity and thought that such broadened access to economics introduces will alter the gender, racial, and socioeconomic makeup of those at the helm of policy-making, thereby unleashing the equity-enhancing capacity of economics. The ripple effects that this generates will create sustained conditions in which women, children, families, and communities can thrive.
