Executive Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that science and medicine matter. Healthcare is an essential sector that has an outsized impact on society, in which Black, Indigenous, and other women of color are consistently left behind. Recent research paints an abysmal reality: Black, Indigenous, and Latinx women comprise no more than 2% of full professors and only 1% of Chairs within U.S. medical schools. Equality Can't Wait! Our RISE-UP resource hub offers a menu of five signature programs to fast-track advancement of early to mid-career Black, Indigenous, and other women of color in academic medicine through opportunities for personal growth and professional advancement. RISE-UP will implement solutions to attack systemic racism, lifting Black, Indigenous, and other women of color toward executive leadership roles in academic medicine. Outcomes include normalizing a new wave of women of color in senior academic medicine leadership roles within 10 years and scaling a sustainable program that will strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives for long-lasting transformational change in academic medicine.
