574+ Strong: Creating Regenerative Food Economies in Indian Country

Racial Equity 2030
Intertribal Agriculture Council

The Intertribal Agriculture Council and partners — Indian Land Tenure Foundation, University of Arkansas, Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative, NDN Collective, Native CDFI Network and Native Governance Center — will address poverty and food insecurity in Native communities through programmatic and policy solutions that build regenerative and just food economies.

Executive Summary

The principles of Indigenous stewardship that once protected the nation’s resources have been replaced by extractive, settler-colonial practices. Our Indigenous food producers are straining under the burden of a colonized lending system. Intertribal Agricultural Council (IAC) seeks to implement bold solutions that shift power dynamics by centering on racial equity and Indigenous principles.

IAC’s Regenerative Finance Model (RFM) provides access to capital to Tribal producers at flexible terms that emphasize success and sustainability. The RFM continually generates its own financial support via a low-risk loan product that ensures the businesses’ revolving profits remain in the local economy. It also enhances the impacts of existing federal assistance programs by increasing the financial viability of individual agricultural operations. By replacing colonized lending practices, our model perpetually regenerates capital for producers. Through this redistribution of wealth, the RFM promotes racial equity and supports Indigenous producers as they care for their families, communities, and lands.
