Executive Summary
Blindness isolates people from their world, leads to premature death, and burdens 2 ½ caretakers for each blind individual. Today more than 36 million people are blind, and the leading cause--cataracts--can be cured with a $25, 10-minute operation, restoring independence and dignity. HCP Cureblindness has been working for 25 years in more than 20 countries.
We’ve proven that needless blindness can be solved. Training, infrastructure, and direct clinical service are the hallmarks of our work. Each year, we cure tens of thousands of people with our proven, validated, and published model. Working with ministries of health and other NGOs, we successfully reduced blindness by 2/3 in Nepal and are on track to do the same in Ghana and Ethiopia. Our organization is scaling up rapidly with a committed board, quality systems, expanding staff, robust programs, and innovative public-private partnerships.

2021 Swift Grant Awardee
The Himalayan Cataract Project, Inc. was selected as a 2021 Swift Grant awardee in partnership with Helen Keller International. The Swift Grants fund provides small grants to Bold Solutions Network members for collaborative projects.
The two leading organizations offering support for the sight-impaired will team up to provide cataracts screenings, training for medical personnel, and subsidized surgeries to reduce preventable cases of blindness in Tanzania. The team will use this as a pilot program in the hope of scaling the model across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Accomplishments
With our implementing partners around the world, HCP Cureblindness reached a true milestone in 2020: surpassing one million completed cataract surgeries.
From our beginnings in the Himalayas to restoring sight in more than 20 countries, we have continued to scale and replicate our proven model to strengthen eye care capacity across the globe. Despite setbacks due to the pandemic, our vision of a world free of unnecessary blindness remains strong, and our work endures.
